The expedition to Antarctica lasted from 1955 to 1958.  Edmund Hillary led one part of the Expedition from one side of the continent to the South Pole.
He followed the example of Sir Ernest Shackelton who attempted to reach the South Pole in 1909, then 1914.  Read about him HERE

Hillary and Fuchs were successful, but only just! The travelled on motorised tractors and snow-cats, completing the journey in 99 days in 1958.  Find different accounts of the journey HERE and HERE
In 1967 Hillary and a team of others climbed Mount Herschel in Antarctica for the first time.
In 1975 his wife and daughter Belinda died in a plane crash while travelling to visit him in Nepal.  Hillary described himself as lonely and restless afterwards. In 1977 he led a jetboat expedition to find the source of the River Ganges. In 1985 he became New Zealand High Commissioner to India, Nepal and Bangladesh
