| Queen Elizabeth I was born 7 September 1533 at Greenwich Palace. Her mother was Anne Boleyn and her father was Henry VIII. The king did not attend her Christening. He had hoped for a son and was very disappointed! | ![]() Anne Boleyn

During her reign, England became the enemy of Catholic Spain. Elizabeth fought against Philip II's navy (the Spanish Armada). Francis Drake commanded her navy well and the weather helped to defeat the Spanish. | ![]() Spanish Armada |

| Elizabeth was very well-educated and could speak six languages. She liked hunting and enjoyed court masques (poetry, songs and dancing). She lived at Hatfield House for some time as a young woman. | ![]() |
During Elizabeth's reign the age of exploration began. Francis Drake claimed new lands for England and brought back new materials and foods such as potatoes and tobacco. The American State, Virginia, is named after her. | ![]() Francis Drake |

Elizabeth lived with various different people after her
mother was executed. These
included Lady Bryant and Kathryn Parre. She got on well with her brother Edward, but not with her sister Mary. When Mary became queen she put Elizabeth in the Tower of London for some time as she thought she was plotting to kill her and become Queen herself. |

She never met her cousin and rival, Mary Queen of Scots, although she was imprisoned in England for many years. At first Elizabeth encouraged people to be kind to Protestants and Catholics, but after Mary Queen of Scots was found to have plotted against her, she had her executed and Catholicism became illegal. | ![]() Mary Queen of Scots and her son James

| After Mary died, Elizabeth became queen. She did not marry and was known as the Virgin Queen. However she had many favourite courtiers and suitors who wanted to marry her. | ![]() Coronation Picture

Queen Elizabeth almost died of Smallpox in 1562 and was left with scars on her face - these were covered with the heavy white make-up which was fashionable at the time. | ![]() Elizabeth in old age |

| When Amy Robsart, the wife of her favourite courtier Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester was found dead at the foot of her stairs - Dudley was suspected or arranging her murder so that he would be free to marry Queen Elizabeth. She later had him executed. | ![]() Elisabeth and Robert Dudley |
She reigned for 45 years from 1558 and died on 24 March 1603 (of blood poisoning). She was nearly 70 years old. | |||||||||||||
